6 Thinking Hats: Scenarios for students

There are six different hats that represent different ways of thinking. They are:

  1. The white hat: This is the hat of facts and logic.
  2. The red hat: This is the hat of emotions and instincts.
  3. The black hat: This is the hat of caution, used to predict negative outcomes.
  4. The yellow hat: This is the hat of optimism, used to look for positive outcomes.
  5. The green hat: This is the hat of creativity, where ideas flow freely and criticism is limited.
  6. The blue hat: This is the hat of control, used for management and organization.

Possible scenarios for ESL students using the Six Thinking Hats theory:

Scenario: A group of ESL students are discussing the pros and cons of a school field trip to a nearby museum.


White Hat: What are the facts and information that we need to consider before deciding whether to go on the field trip?


Red Hat: How do you feel about the idea of going on the field trip? What are your emotions and intuitions telling you?


Black Hat: What are some potential problems or risks associated with going on the field trip? What are the drawbacks?


Yellow Hat: What are some potential benefits or advantages of going on the field trip? What are the positives?
